Save Time with Scoring Stencils

Updated: Nov 28, 2019

Fed up with scoring multiple choice assessments? Do it in a snap with a stencil. It's easy, trust me! Check the video to the right, or keep reading if that's how you prefer to learn. Click here to go directly to YouTube if you have trouble with the video on this page.

All you need for this project is a self-healing mat, a screw punch, card stock and a marker.

A scoring stencil is simply a multiple choice answer sheet copied onto a firm and sturdy media such as card stock. I've found 110 lb. bond to be the best for this project. Next you will need a screw punch, which will make holes anywhere on the page. You'll use this to cut out holes for the correct answers. I have "man hands," so I prefer something with a larger grip, you may prefer something smaller. FYI, if you do decide to order using my links, please keep in mind that the link is only active for 24 hours. So, please come back here and click again when you decide to give it a try.

The screw punch comes with three sizes of punch which are stored right in the handle so you can't lose them. All you need do is unscrew the ... screw? I'm not sure what that's called officially, but you unscrew it, insert the size punch you desire, screw it back on, and have at it.

Optional, but highly recommended, is a self-healing cutting mat. If you do any work with an X-Acto knife or something similar, you probably have experienced the joys of a cutting mat. If not, PLEASE be careful. You will mar your surface with the punch. Ask me how I know...

Once you have your card stock answer sheet and your punch, have at it. Punch away until you have indicated all your correct answers. The next step is also optional and highly recommended. Take a Sharpie or some other marking tool (not a pen) and run it around the inside of each punched hole. The color will make the correct answers stand out against the white color of the answer sheet. I suggest punching out the first number/numeral of each section to help you line up the stencil a bit more easily.

Ah, yes. You may be wondering where you can get the answer sheet. Follow these steps:

  • Click my link and complete an order from Amazon. You may purchase anything you like for school, yourself, your children, etc.

  • Sign up for my blog and send me a message asking for the ORT 7 bubble sheet and I will email you a copy.

I've added the minimum scores for each section. Feel free to change yours based on your own borough's requirements.

That's about it. Now all you need do is lay the stencil over a student's answer sheet and you will easily see correct and incorrect answers. I recommend making a little back-and-forth line in a contrasting color that will be easy to see. Using blue or black, or even green can blend in with the font. There's a reason the "Red Pen" is the teacher's friend: it stands out!
