Water Therapy Japanese Style

Updated: Nov 28, 2019

At first it seems like you're drinking an entire lake, stick with it and you'll get all the benefit. I promise!

Ah, water therapy. No, this type doesn't involve enemas or colonics. It's Japanese! Makes me wonder if there are other types of water therapies. Unfortunately, this does not involve spa days luxuriating in a hot spring, or an onsen if you are in Japan, but it DOES involve your internal body systems luxuriating in hydration. Beauty begins on the inside, right? Or, at my age, health begins on the inside, right? On second thought, why not both??

In a nutshell, this is a simple enough process. You drink a quart of warm water as soon as you wake up in the morning, and then wait 45 minutes before having breakfast or even brushing your teeth. The idea behind it is that this gives your body a chance to hydrate after “breaking the fast” and your organs don’t have to expend energy digesting a meal during this time. This seemed an ideal way to get my antioxidants in me first thing in the morning as well via my tinctures. Let’s do it!!

I started this during our mid-winter recess, which is President’s Week. It took me nearly 45 minutes to drink the water! Actually, more like 20, but it’s A LOT of water. I drink most of my water during work and the evenings, so this took some getting used to. My concern was that if I did this when I was working, I’d be full to bursting when I got to school…and hopefully not bursting before that!

As it turned out, for the first 3 weeks or so, I didn’t have to pee after 45 minutes. That told me I need to drink more water. I had been fooling myself thinking I was drinking a lot of water, when I wasn’t. I don’t drink soda or alcohol, so figured I was good. Lesson: drink more water!

My plan, and this was when I was on my break, was to get up early (yay!!), give myself about 10 minutes to drink the water with my tinctures, meditate, do a yoga class on my Roku (story for another time), or at least some sun salutations, then get ready for work.

Just kidding. I didn’t do any of that once school started up again. I DO drink the water every morning, I just don’t do any of the other things. It still takes me a long time to drink the water, and I find myself sipping it throughout my morning time until it’s time to leave. I have a large 24 oz. drinking glass I use, so while it’s not a quart, it still way more than I ever drank before.

Do any of you do this? Please post a comment to share your experiences. I’m very grateful to have you here and hope you’ll stop by again.

Be strong, be grateful, be awesome!
